A 4 mm wetsuit can be worn the longest in The Netherlands, and will provide you warmth and comfort from April to October. If you are easily cold, you can also dress up warmer with neoprene surf accessories. In Southern European surf locations, this neoprene thickness is also suitable for winter. We recommend a 4 mm wetsuit in water temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees.

With a 4 mm wetsuit, it is important that it fits well on your body in order for it to do its job efficiently. A wetsuit has an insulating function. its intention is not to keep you dry from the inside. Rather, it just heats up a layer of water that lies between you and the neoprene. This layer of water retains your body heat and prevents you from getting cold. Thus, if your wetsuit is too big, cold water will constantly flow through and cannot heat up. Most body heat is lost through your head, hands and feet. So if you’re feeling fresh in a 4 mm wetsuit, you can always add a cap, gloves or boots with it. This keeps you warmer longer, allowing you extended surf sessions! We always recommend trying on a wetsuit before investing in one as the fit may differ between brands! For example, an O’Neill and Billabong wetsuit of the same size might have one fit better than the other.
