Drew Brophy, Posca Paint visionary, melds his iconic 90s "quantum surf art" with Matt's revamped RNF '96 performance fish shape. This dynamic collaboration bridges art, physics, and coastal living, transporting us to the mid-1990s when Drew, Matt, and their crew conjured captivating chaos.
Amid a two-decade drought in performance design, Matt Biolos broke new ground in '94 and '95. Through experimentation, he crafted various fish shapes for himself, Chris Ward, and Cory Lopez, igniting a revolution in performance hybrids. This shift triggered a wave of curiosity from surfers and shapers alike, drawn to these groundbreaking designs. The RNF '96, a testament to Matt's genius, carried designs that teen sensations Chris and Cory took to the North Shore, imprinting an everlasting legacy on surfing. Immortalized in the iconic '97 surf film "5’5” X 19 ¼," these boards became legendary.
At the core of Matt's fish designs lies a performance ethos, inspired by MR's competitive twin fins of the '70s and '80s. These designs feature subtly pulled-in tails, engineered to excel in waves of all sizes. Unlike fish designs rooted in the wide-tailed kneeboards of the '70s, Matt seamlessly merged 25 years of board-building insight to create an enhanced surfboard. This homage to the '96 RNF versions reinvents its origins while paying homage to the past.
"Through rigorous testing conducted by Kolohe, Coco, Ian Crane, Crosby Cola, and other 'guests,' including myself, during the final months of 2020, we stand with unwavering confidence in the RNF ’96's ability to not only meet but exceed expectations. It stands as an all-encompassing, rip-ready source of enjoyment for surfers of various skill levels." - Matt Biolos
