When the cold winter months arrive, the water will become so cold that your feet will also have to be protected against the cold. Surf shoes come in the same thicknesses as wetsuits and the same rule applies as with the rest of your neoprene. For the Dutch winter, that means at least 5 mm thickness is needed to get through the winter comfortably. If you get cold feet quickly, look for a slightly thicker shoe! There are also different shapes of surf shoes: round toe, split toe, and internal split toe.

The round toe surf shoes are just like a neoprene sock with a reinforced sole. At the split toes, the big toe is separated from the remaining four toes. This is done to keep more board feel when you are surfing. It also keeps your shoe in place better, and your foot slides less in the shoe. Then there is the internal split. You can see this as a combination between a round toe and split toe surf shoe: inside the shoe, your big toe is separated from the remaining four toes, so that your shoe stays in place better. The difference with the regular split toe is that all five toes are within the same shoe. This will keep your toes warm and fuzzy.

There are 3mm, 5mm and 7mm surf shoes. In addition, we also have reef boots. These have a thickness between 1mm and 2mm. We recommend 5mm boots for the Dutch winter months.
